Lights show the way

As you stroll through the romantic lanes of the Michaelis Quarter after dark, a warm glow shines up from the cobblestones. It emanates from countless lights carefully embedded in granite slabs and set into the streets. Around 3000 of these slabs, along with towering stelae, form Hildesheim's World Heritage Trail, connecting the two UNESCO World Heritage churches, St. Michael's and St. Mary's Cathedral, with other sights in the city. The 1,2-kilometer-long trail begins at the historic market square. From there, you walk along Kurzer Hagen to St. Michael's Hill and on to St. Michael's Church. After soaking up the atmosphere of this over 1,000-year-old sacred building, the granite slabs (with inscriptions such as "World Heritage Trail") guide you down Burgstraße directly to the next highlight: the cathedral, which impresses with its sheer size. From there, you return to the market square via the cathedral courtyard. The lights guide you through Hildesheim's "parlor" in a stylish way, and the World Heritage Trail is also a valuable companion during the day – especially since there are all sorts of signs along the way with city maps and information about the attractions on the roadside.
