Good prospects for explorers
A day in Hildesheim flies by. So it's best not to get up too late; there's so much to see. Why not start with a broad overview? Those who climb the 364 steps to the top of the church tower (the tallest of its kind in the state!) of the Gothic St. Andrew's Church are rewarded with a fantastic view from 75 meters up, overlooking the city's sights and the entire region beyond. Truly breathtaking. Down below, the market square, surrounded by half-timbered houses, with its Roland Fountain and town hall, the picturesque Butchers' Guildhall dating from 1529, and inviting open-air restaurants, looks tiny. Just a little further on rise the imposing cathedral, begun in 872, and the almost equally impressive St. Michael's Church, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After visiting all these highlights, you can then embark on further explorations. For example, insider tips like a walk through the street art district or a view of the night sky over Hildesheim from the observatory in the Yellow Tower are enticing – even for locals there is always something new to discover!
