Medieval heritage, vibrant cultural life and the most beautiful market square in the world
Wilhelm von Humboldt already knew that the "most beautiful market square in the world" is located in Hildesheim. It's no wonder, then, that the square, framed by magnificent half-timbered houses and cozy cafés, remains the vibrant heart of this cultural city. From here, the major and minor attractions are just a stone's throw away.

Two World Heritage sites can be visited in one day: St. Michael's Church and the Maritime Cathedral – both over 1.000 years old and unique examples of pre-Romanesque architecture and art. In the Cathedral Museum, you can admire fascinating special exhibitions as well as the Cathedral Treasury, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picturesquely situated in the Cathedral's inner courtyard is the 1.000-year-old rosebush – Hildesheim's symbol.

But Hildesheim is more than just history, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and half-timbered houses! The city loves to celebrate its vibrant culture. Above all, the EVI Lichtungen light art biennial and the Pflasterzauber circus, theater, and dance festival captivate people from all over Germany. And then there's M'era Luna, Jazztime, or musicals at the theater. for Lower Saxony – home to the only German theater with its own musical company – offers something for every musical taste. And let's not forget one of the most important Egyptological museums in Germany: the RPM Museum.

And for the ultimate panoramic view, climb the steps of St. Andrew's – Lower Saxony's tallest church tower. From the very top, there's so much more to discover: quaint half-timbered alleyways, green oases, blue waters, the wildlife park with its colorful array of animals, and the rolling hills of the Harz foothills. Perfect for planning your next hike or bike ride. So, off to Hildesheim!

Arrival & Parking

You can reach Hildesheim quickly and comfortably by train, car, bus, or campervan. It's only 35 kilometers from Hanover, the capital of Lower Saxony, and even has a public transport connection.

For those arriving by car, Hildesheim is ideally connected via the A7 motorway from Hamburg or Munich – through two exits near the city.

From the east and west, the A2 leads from the Ruhr area and Berlin via the Hannover-Ost motorway junction to the A7 towards Hildesheim.

The well-developed federal highways B1, B3, B6, B494, B444 and B243 lead directly to the city center.
