Rotating exhibition of contemporary art in a historical setting

The small village of Holle boasts a major attraction. Even from afar, you can see the distinctive pagoda roof of Derneburg Castle, the undisputed landmark of this charming landscape a few kilometers southeast of Hildesheim. Originally built as a fortress in the 12th century and later converted into a castle by court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, the property has always been highly appealing and has frequently changed hands. For a time, Derneburg Castle belonged to the painter Georg Baselitz before the American art collector Andrew Hall purchased it and transformed it into a private museum.

Every Saturday and Sunday, several exhibitions of contemporary art can be visited. A guided tour of the main building is available, offering insights into the exhibitions. The works in the annex and the sculpture park on the castle grounds can be visited independently. The sculpture park features works by artists from the Hall Collection and the Hall Art Foundation, including Tracey Emin, Alicja Kwade, Georg Baselitz, Julian Schnabel, and Jenny Holzer.

TIPP: Make your journey easy and convenient by train. Derneburg is well connected to the rail network and directly accessible from Hildesheim Central Station. Both the Innerste Cycle Path, as well as the Ambergau Cycle Path They lead directly past the castle or end there.

NOTEYou can also buy tickets for the museum at the Tourist Information Hildesheim magazine.
