UNESCO World Heritage Site St. Michaelis
One of Hildesheim's highlights is St. Michael's Church, which boasts a 1.000-year history of consecration and stands near the historic city center. Together with the Cathedral of St. Mary, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. Its slightly elevated position, thick towers, and walls lend the former Benedictine monastery a fortress-like appearance – imposing on the outside, harmonious on the inside. The three-aisled basilica is one of the most important surviving churches in the Ottonian, or pre-Romanesque, architectural style. You will feel the special atmosphere of this sacred gem. Don't forget to look up inside the church – a major attraction is the monumental 13th-century ceiling painting in the nave: the Tree of Christ is depicted on 1.300 oak panels.
