The original building of modernism

Light, air, and clarity – these were the characteristics intended to define the Fagus Factory, built in 1911. You'll see that the plan was successfully implemented – in Alfeld (Leine), a town of 18.500 inhabitants about 35 kilometers southwest of Hildesheim, you can experience this fascinating pioneering example of modern industrial architecture. Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, created a building of almost weightless elegance with his glass and steel construction, a rarity for factories at the time. The factory was listed as a historical monument as early as 1946 and has been in continuous operation ever since, producing items such as shoe lasts and measuring and fire protection systems. In the interactive UNESCO Visitor Center, you'll learn why the factory has been a German World Heritage Site since 2011. You'll also find a Fagus-Gropius exhibition on the company's history and architecture, and you can even take a look inside the model cellar. A video guide accompanies visitors on the grounds, and later you can treat yourself to culinary delights in the café and on the UNESCO terrace – the day trip from Hildesheim is well worth it!

Due to its child- and family-friendliness, the Fagus Factory is even considered a Children's Holiday Land Lower Saxony The company was inspected and certified.
