St. Andrew's Church Tower - A Brief History

The Gothic-style Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Andrew is not only the most striking landmark of the city of Hildesheim, but at 114,5 meters, it is also the tallest church tower in Lower Saxony. It was destroyed by an air raid on March 22, 1945, towards the end of World War II, but the faithful reconstruction of the landmark began that same year and was successfully completed in the 1960s. In 1995, exactly 50 years after its destruction, the association "Aufstieg Kirchturm St.-Andreas e.V." (Ascent of St. Andrew's Church Tower) opened the church tower to the public. Since then, visitors have been able to climb the 364 steps to the viewing platform and enjoy the unique panoramic view over the city's rooftops from a height of 75 meters.
Climbing the church tower is also a real experience. After 130 steps, you reach the first intermediate level at a height of 28 meters. This is followed by the bell tower at 44 meters, and the old mechanical clock mechanism at 56 meters.
