From fortress to natural paradise
Want to experience the vibrant energy of Hildesheim? Then come to this biennial summer festival: the "Hildesheimer Wallungen" (Hildesheim Ramparts). For several days, there's music, recitations, food, and theater – showcasing the city's largest park in all its glory. Originally built with ramparts and ditches to protect the population, the ramparts now form a green semicircle of about three kilometers around the city center. Strolling along the promenades with their lush green spaces, avenues, and ponds, you'll be treated to fragrant flora year-round and enjoy the cheerful chirping of the birds that find safe nesting spots here in the heart of the city. Along the way, you'll also pass the Kehrwiederturm (Kehrwieder Tower), which owes its name to a legend: According to the tale, its bell once guided a young noblewoman home after she had lost her way in the adjacent forest.
