Hildesheim Cathedral Museum
The Golden Madonna, one of the oldest works of art from the Middle Ages. The Oswald Reliquary, a gift from the Welf Duke Henry the Lion. The silver crook from the staff of Abbot Erkanbald of Fulda, the cross of Bishop Bernward. All this and much more is presented to you in the Hildesheim Cathedral Museum. The core of the collection and the museum's most valuable holdings are the artworks of the Cathedral Treasury, which largely date from the 11th to 13th centuries and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Magnificent Baroque tapestries compete here with glittering golden medieval relics, silver candlesticks, and splendid, ancient images of the Virgin Mary. A sandstone relief approximately nine meters high in the rood screen hall depicts a fascinating sequence of scenes from the Old and New Testaments. For those who wish not only to see but also to hear, no problem: The sacred splendor occasionally serves as the backdrop for atmospheric events – for example, for enchanting musical performances in the "KlangRaum" concert series.
