Marienburg Castle

An absolute must!
For film and series fans!

Even though the castle, located only about 15 km from Hildesheim, is currently closed to the public, its impressive exterior, with its turrets, battlements, and hidden corners, remains an absolute highlight and a worthwhile destination. From afar, the former summer residence of the House of Welf rises high above the forest, enchanting visitors with its neo-Gothic architecture. It's no wonder, then, that this fairytale castle has long since become a film hotspot: In the internationally acclaimed teen series "Maxton Hall," which begins its second season on November 7, 2025, the magnificent building is transformed into an elite British boarding school. The ARD fairytale film "The Tale of the Twelve Months," the arte documentary "Münchhausen – The Story of a Lie," and the German-Australian youth series "In Your Dreams" were also filmed here.

The romantic flair of the place likely stems from the estate's original purpose: King George V gifted it to his Marie as a birthday present, a token of his love and a place of refuge. The royal couple were unable to enjoy the beauty of the place for long, as they were forced into exile from the Prussians just nine years after construction began. Nevertheless, with this "Neuschwanstein of the North," the last members of the House of Welf created a romantic utopia that we can still experience today.

Important notice: Due to extensive renovations, the museum and castle rooms, as well as the inner courtyard, will remain closed to visitors for the time being. Further information can be found at www.stiftung-schloss-marienburg.de.
